Let Google remind you of your Facebook events by sms

Step by Step instructions on setting up a solution to help you remember events to attend – especially the tons of event invites you get from your Facebook friends!

I could never remember such a lot of gigs, it's actually not rocket science – I don't remember them, I let my calendar remember them and then Google smses me to remind me.

Thought I'd share how I set this up (for those who don't already know this).

Instructions as follows: continue reading»

New gadgets reviewed

It was my birthday month in May, so I decided that it was "Spoil Anastacia" time.

After about a month or so of using the gadget, I think I can give my two cents worth about each of them.

Mouse:   Logitech MX 518 Optical Gaming Mouse When it comes to computer items, I am all for comfort, reasonably priced – not cheap not overbearing in price either.   This mouse is the one model that actually fit the formation of my hands and I found it extremely comfortable when I used it.   It helps if you have big hands to use this mouse.  If the mouse is too small for your hand, this will affect the joints and whatever there but something. The stock of this mouse ran out about a year ago and I looked for it all over. After already giving up on the mouse I was about to buy something similar, when I mentioned that I wanted something similar to the MS 518.  The salesperson surprised me by telling me that he had two  in stock and I took both. If you use your pc a lot, I recommend gaming mouse pads if it's not an optical mouse and a gaming mouse cause it is built for endless clicking and usage and so you will get more wear out of it in the end. Those crappy mice that come together with your laptop is no good. Neither are the ones that come free with your wireless keyboards!

Handheld Gaming Console:  Nintendo DSi XL My first handheld console I own. I can't compare it other than with what I read up about the competition consoles out there. What I like most about the DSi XL (also called DSi LL) is the fact that I game anywhere I want, I have two on board cameras – one facing my way and one outward (there's a word for that but I forget). The other cool thing is that it has wireless connectivity and browsing , chatting etc are all possible. Read Wikipedia for more detailed spec information.

What I love most about the console:

  • it kept my six year old nephew busy for hours and he was happy and learning at the same time and also out of our way while we had our family braai
  • I can use it on the *cough cough* toilet
  • I can take it with me anywhere and record voice or take a photo of someone without them knowing cause they think I am playing a game
  • The internet connection, browser, wireless function
  • Makes for a good another browser to test on when creating websites
  • The games of cause but I rarely play on here anymore – the novelty wore off cause I bought ….

Android Phone:  HTC Desire  I am sure by now you know how brilliant this phone actually is. If you didn't. HTC's slogan actually is "quietly brilliant" ha ha. My first impressions of the phone was wow. I was scared to use all the functions and didn't know what half of it meant. After about a week of using it with no manual, I only then read it and learned about a few new things.

The things I couldn't figure out on my own were:

  • how to delete an sms
  • how to delete a widget if i added it to one of the five  my desktop pages or whatever its called
  • probably 40% more of its functionality that I am not even aware of yet – I think I got to page 12 of the manual so far
  • how to forward an sms
  • how to delete a icon from my desktop

What I love most about the phone:

  • the fact that my everything is interconnected to everything – I'm referring to my social networking accounts, email, calendar blabla
  • i can have anything as an app if its available and immediately have it
  • It's my first android so still overwhelmed by the world of adding apps to a mobile phone
  • the camera – so much better than my previous phone but 5 mega pixel only – still trying to get used to point and shoot again though
  • finally I can use twitpic again
  • the fact that I can change just about everything on the phone as it is and the fact that its an android phone

What I am not so happy with:

  • the battery life – yes they say it's dependent on usage of phone but out of the four people I asked that has the phone, they too only have about a day usage of a fully charged battery
  • I can't buy any pouches, protection sleeves etc in south africa until probably six months knowing this country – it comes with no protection and believe me, it needs it – have found Lab88 so gonna check out their store and buy through them
  • wasn't happy with the standard keyboard, the keys are too small even if you keep the phone landscape – I have since tried Thick Buttons (app), and now trying out Swype
  • i still struggle with saving contacts or sending a contact a message cause i have it linked to my Facebook, Twitter and all those accounts so I think my address book became too large to understand it anymore
  • I have no idea why if I have a contact saved to my address book, if they call, it does not show the name – advise here please
  • If I go to People I sometimes don't find a contact, then after finding their number elsewhere, I call them then their details from Facebook comes through? Why's that?

Overall I am a happy chappy – now all we needing is a new pc, new lens for my camera and then we should be sorted for probably only two months – until something better comes out again!

Can we just have an ADSL line already…PLEASE!

A rough calculation using our bank records gave us evidence of how much money we actually have been spending on Vodacom airtime in the last two years.

It was because of this reason we decided to have a Telkom ADSL line installed – this was back in February 2010. So we applied at the Telkom shop in Canal Walk, completed the forms and I gave my ID copy.

Just over a week or so I received this letter from Telkom. Now in this letter you will see that already they apologised for not installing on time. Note that the date they sent it was 23 February 2010 and there is no name of the person that signed that letter.  They also got my title and name wrong but thats a minor.

Scanned copy of letter (click to enlarge) ->

End of April I had to move because I was evicted as the landlord wanted the place for her “grandson” from JHB. I used to live in Walmer Estate at the address in this letter and I requested that this application just be moved to a new address.

I won’t tell you a word of a lie, but Telkom called me on 30 April (the  Friday before I had to move) , to say that they were going to install the line in Walmer Estate  on Monday 03 May 2010 – the same day the moving van was going to move me… continue reading»

Touring Cape Town Stadium

The visitors center at the stadium reopened and tours are once again available to the public. We managed to get a booking for Tuesday 16 March at 2pm.

Interesting facts that I learned:

  • there are three holding cells – one for males, one for females and one for juveniles – this is inside the police station that is available at the stadium
  • the first female crane operator in South Africa, Zoliswa Gila, helped construct the stadium and is now employed as a tour guide at the stadium; she said she had to climb up 90 meters to get in to her crane every day – imagine she needed to go to the toilet!
  • The entire stadium was built in 33 months from 2007 to December 2009 continue reading»

RAMFest IV review

I couldn’t believe that Boo! were getting back together and performing at Ramfest IV. I remember reading the line-up on the event page on Last.fm. back in December 2009 and commented “Boo! ????? Are you sure?”.

So yes, the reunion of Boo! is what interested me in the festival this year and it’s the reason I had SUCH  great time. We only trekked through to the festival on the Saturday afternoon, following directions from a mate in Franschhoek. “It’s quicker to come via Franschhoek” (driving from Cape Town). Bullshit! It took us at least two hours to get to the party – a whole hour behind schedule.  Nekkies wasn’t on the map to do the distance checking ourselves (for the record) and we went there in geek gear and mapped the entire route.

Never again will another trance head or RAMfest party goer be lost on route to the destination.

I went all prepared and packed in my alcohol in non glass bottles…

For the record, if you throw Smirnoff Storms in to a empty 1.5L Lemon Twist bottle, guess what/. It looks like Lemon Twist. If you throw it in to a Ginger beer bottle looks like ginger beer. Only thing though, NEVER leave the 1.5L empty bottle in the car when the next day is like 30 degrees hot. That shit melted.

Got there just as the sun was setting. Nice! No one got to see my skimpy shorts and shades and I settled for my fisherman’s pants as it got kinda chilly.

So I rock up at the fest, we pay our way and get out arm bands etc. Madam refuses to walk in with her 1.5L Lemon Twist alcohol and opts to buy from the bar inside instead. Moerse big mistake. There went at least 35 minutes of waiting to be looked at. Ramfest removed the lineup so I forget who I saw and in what order… continue reading»

New word I made up

The ability to pretend that nothing happened (with a straight face) and still be confused (yourself) as to whether it actually did happen.

Where my passion lies & heart wants to be…

Twenty seven years old, business background for schooling /tech level, but accidentally got into academic administration at a tertiary institution and been stuck doing that since 2002. It wasn’t a complete waste of time as it gave me insights into many opportunities and gave me lots of experience – but the challenge is no longer and the passion just simply does not lie there any more.

For a while now,  I frequented live gigs, Checking out artists perform their music live, I was taking pictures of artists, informing people of their gigs on various social networking websites, just always staying on top of happenings in the music industry. Even after the gig, I’d write up a review sometimes, upload my pictures, link it to the event that was created etc.

I even went to extent of learning bbcode to be able to update the biography’s on last.fm (wasn’t that hard).

Gradually this became my passion and people started recognising it and showing an interest in the promo type work that it is I was doing (apparently it’s called specialist marketing according to Paul).

I started looking into the possibility of actually doing this as a career and most importantly, I wanted to be able to survive and maintain myself still, if I were to resign from the admin position.

Thing that probably made me stay on in the interim, is my fear that the industry was small which meant little room for entering into it and that the artists needing the exposure wouldn’t have the money to pay me to do their promos. So I paused the resignation and just barely sticking out the stress, overload of work, and really trying hard to actually get the oomph to wake up in the morning to go to that place. continue reading»
