End of November; I’m supposed to love this time of year? Bonus month, Sunny days, Year end…but annually, I complain about this at this time! For the last three years I have done so! It’s not worth it I tell you. This is gonna be the last!
One of my responsibilities at work is to upload the examination results onto the student system. My deadline is on Tuesday at 12pm. So yes, not a happy chappy right now. What makes it worse is, the student system. Owned by Oracle. That’s all I feel like saying about them right now.
Some stats:
The statistics will give you insight into what I look after at the office. The stats are only for 2008. There are more courses but they are not active for this year. There are more students but they might be on a leave of absence i.e. away for a year etc.
Undergraduate:
Courses: 27
Students: 320 +
Postgraduate:
Courses: 57 +
Students: 259 +
Total number of registered students: 579 +
I guess it would have okay had I only been responsible for say six courses which contain e.g. 100 students in each course. That will be the life!
It’s not the job that is all that bad, it just became too much over time and now it is horrible because it is too much to do. So you left feeling incomplete cause the tasks are all incomplete. You feel like you have not achieved , like you not capable and therefore unmotivated. I am considering moving on very soon. This is not what I studied for, this is not what I intend doing for the rest of my life, this is certainly not where my interests lie at this point and it sure as hell does not pay me well enough to be convinced that it might be.
There is more to life than ensuring that the student results are up in time for graduation. Year in and out I see them graduate with their BSc’s and their MSc’s and their PhD’s… I could have had my degree three times over already? At the same time I would have starved to death because I have been on my own since nineteen! i.e. I couldn’t have worked and studied at the same time. I don’t regret doing this, I just know its time to move on. I have taken the best of “this phase” and intend to move on from here to something better.
If I don’t get this deadline done in time, I guess some people will not be graduating this year. Some others might not be able to renew their registration; in other words, what I am busy with right now is going to affect the lives of these students forever. Some will be glad they passed, some others highly pissed off and sad they failed. At least I am not the only one stressing out here! They can’t wait for 12pm to be able to see the outcome of their examination. They can’t wait to party or to commit suicide *ouch anna thats nasty*

So now that you have insight into some of my day job duties, I do hope that this Christmas, you will be sending me a massage voucher, day at the spa voucher, or something along those lines…a new job offer would also be appreciated!
