I couldn’t believe that Boo! were getting back together and performing at Ramfest IV. I remember reading the line-up on the event page on Last.fm. back in December 2009 and commented “Boo! ????? Are you sure?”.
So yes, the reunion of Boo! is what interested me in the festival this year and it’s the reason I had SUCH great time. We only trekked through to the festival on the Saturday afternoon, following directions from a mate in Franschhoek. “It’s quicker to come via Franschhoek” (driving from Cape Town). Bullshit! It took us at least two hours to get to the party – a whole hour behind schedule. Nekkies wasn’t on the map to do the distance checking ourselves (for the record) and we went there in geek gear and mapped the entire route.
Never again will another trance head or RAMfest party goer be lost on route to the destination.
I went all prepared and packed in my alcohol in non glass bottles…
For the record, if you throw Smirnoff Storms in to a empty 1.5L Lemon Twist bottle, guess what/. It looks like Lemon Twist. If you throw it in to a Ginger beer bottle looks like ginger beer. Only thing though, NEVER leave the 1.5L empty bottle in the car when the next day is like 30 degrees hot. That shit melted.
Got there just as the sun was setting. Nice! No one got to see my skimpy shorts and shades and I settled for my fisherman’s pants as it got kinda chilly.
So I rock up at the fest, we pay our way and get out arm bands etc. Madam refuses to walk in with her 1.5L Lemon Twist alcohol and opts to buy from the bar inside instead. Moerse big mistake. There went at least 35 minutes of waiting to be looked at. Ramfest removed the lineup so I forget who I saw and in what order…
I do remember seeing Lark, Boo!, Marcus Wormstorm, MixnBlend, Isochronous, Pendulum, some death metal band for 5 mins, uhm…
Lark: Can’t say I enjoyed their music even though I remember them to be a whole lot better back in the day
Boo!: I was ALL over the show. At some point I ended up on the right side of the stage where someone nicely spilled their beer all over just me , camera thankfully safe! It was after that , that I settled on the far left near Dex from WhatsOn for most of the set.
I knew every single tune they sang and their act was exactly like I imagined it to be. Yes it was my first time seeing them live. Some of the tracks they played (if my memory is correct): Lucki, Bipass, Champion. There was one other track that I don’t have and it’s bugging me cause i wanna know the name already…I knew the track though.
Chris Chameleon promised to only wear his heals for half an hour but he managed to pull it off for the entire set. I couldn’t help but notice the elderly ladies giggling every time Chris spoke dutch and they knew all the songs.
The reformed band consisted of members Chris Chameleon, Ampie Omo and Riaan van Rensburg. Fans of the old Boo! band will remember the original Princess Leonie being Leon Retief.
Regardless of the slightly new band, they were still that same Boo! band that won a 2002 SAMA award. Great performance.
Thank you to the band for providing free Boo! car licence disc stickers upon entrance to the event. The seven year wait was certainly worth the while … oh, and so was the cost of the RAMfest ticket to see you (R350).
Mix n Blend: Always enjoy their set – was dancing and taking pics throughout their set. Dome was REALLY packed during this time.
Marcus Wormstorm: Insane beats – sorry – I reallly suck at reviews.
Isochronous: I expected them to be a lot non 80’s e.
Pendulum: Laser show was cool, hot lead guy, knew most of their music, crowd loved them. Loved their set.
The setup and organisation was professional. The venue spacious , airy, and grassy green. The toilets were , well they always stink, whether beginning or ending of any festival, that shit stinks. Trekked along with my wind up torch as always, found an empty toilet , held torch in mouth and pissed; only to see a big freaking daddy long legs spider – that made me wanna cry for that piss to be shorter. Why oh why does she indulge in so much alcohol?
At some point we went to the car where we met up with a girl who’s tent burnt down. Walking all alone with all her baggage and started talking to the security guys. Shame. Apparently four tents burnt out at the festival. That really sucks. I wasn’t there, but like, were there no fire marshals in site? I don’t even remember seeing the First Aid tent (if there was one?) – Let me not even get started on the FNB ATM that was at the venue. I shit you not, it ran out of money before 11pm on the Saturday #fail.
Overall, the festival was cool, well worth the bucks I paid for it, regardless of staying there for only just one night. We made our way home around 3am where we got Mix n Blend at the first Engen One Stop garage after the tunnel.
Good fun.
Thank you Ramfest organisers, Thank you to the bands and most of all, Thanks to the “well behaved” festival goers for not messing up my camera nor burning up my tent …
I will either update this post or make a new one containing the photographs that I took …
